About Curry Leaf Days, 2022

Several invited talks on various topics in mathematics have been planned. A panel discussion titled Mathematics beyond the mainstream classroom has been planned, which aims to bring together renowned professors and eminent educationists to have a discussion about the future of mathematics in our country. Participants may submit questions for the panelists through the registration form. On the last day of the conference we plan to celebrate the birthday of Curry Leaf, and the birthday of Prof. S. Kumaresan, the founder of the MTTS programme.

Invited Talk-1

What is Complex Analysis and Why it should be learnt?
Dr. Venkata Balaji

Why do we need complex numbers? Why do we need to look at complex-valued functions of a complex variable? The talk will try to answer questions such as these and motivate the need for complex numbers and variables in the context of Algebra, Analysis, Topology and Geometry

Invited Talk-2

Teaching and learning of Mathematics: Insights from Algebra
Dr. Rakhi Banerjee

I will share some insights from a long teaching experiment in the area of mathematics. I will also situate this in the larger context of teaching and learning of mathematics in the country.

Workshop on LaTeX

Creating presentations using LATEX
Mr. Kiran P

Beamer is a LATEX class for creating content-oriented presentations. It carries all the advantages of LATEX and one obvious disadvantage: you have to know LATEX in order to use Beamer. A Beamer presentation is created like any other LATEX document: It has a preamble, a body, and different slides (called frames) which can include environments like table and figure. In this talk, the basics of Beamer, starting from creating a simple slide, inserting figures and tables, typesetting mathematical expressions, presenting theorems to drawing a figure using the TikZ package is introduced. A small introduction to creating PDFs with animated content is also given.

Panel Discussion

Mathematics beyond the mainstream classroom

If a student is pursuing math for graduation, what are the odds that they are aware of the different routes they can take to establish a successful career? They don’t have enough information regarding which course will be more suitable. They start following a herd of students without having proper information if whether the path will be a good option or not. Any mainstream job profile attracts them. Due to everyone being cooped up in their homes, at the peak of COVID-19, the students ended up with a heap of information and a lack of communication, ending up becoming a little disoriented in their academics and career goals considering they were left with minimal to no guidance. Therefore, the question which arises is whether we are prepared to face it and if we should take any precautionary measures for the same. Moreover, even when they have graduated from college and moving ahead in other spheres of their career, they do not seem to have proper information regarding what lies next in line for them. They came to college confused and they left probably even more confused. How can this huge pile of confusion be sorted out? Who can we look up to for answers?

PTMT Talk-1

Integration of Technology for effective Teaching Learning
Dr. B. Surendranath Reddy

Mathematics can be taught more effectively by integrating software wherever required. In this talk, we see useful software like Geogebra for geometry and algebra coming together, digital notes taking software like Onenote and Xournal++, Screen recording software like OBS Studio, usefulness of digital pens, etc. These software not only help in effective teaching, but also play crucial role while designing e-content or MOOC course.
